Free Downloads of CD Rippers

Why spend when you can get it for free?  That’s the advice of seasoned audio hobbyists who are into CD ripping.  Indeed, there are several CD ripping software that does an excellent job of extracting content from your CD to the PC drive that can be downloaded as freeware online. The more popular ones are CDex, Exact Audio Copy, and Audiograbber, to mention the best ripping freeware.

• Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is the most widely acclaimed among online reviewers and has received Gizmo's Freeware Award for being the best ripper in its class. Need we say more? Its advantage lies in ripping CDs that other rippers have problems with.  It provides the highest accuracy ripping into WAV but while it transcode into compressed MP3, it cannot transcode form one compressed format to another.  It also requires an external LAME encoding engine for MP3 transcription but this is also a freeware.

• Audiograbber can automatically normalize the CD content, delete silence from the start and/or end of tracks, and encode them to a variety of formats including MP3.  You can also record as WAV or MP3 your LP's or cassette tapes.  Of all the freeware, it has the most features.  But it also runs only on the PC platform.

• CDex holds the distinction as the most popular CD ripper based on a recorded 32 million downloads as of 2007 and was the recipient of the Sourceforge.net Community Choice Award for that year. It has an advantage over EAC in that it can transcode from one compressed format to another. But like most other rippers, it will not be forgiving of problematic CDs with severe scratches and cloudiness. It also requires the LAME encoder to transcribed WAV into MP3 files.
